"To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill."
- Sun-Tsu

Since opening its doors in 2003, CHIMO Taekwondo has distinguished itself as one of Atlantic Canada’a premiere martial arts education centres. We are proud of our dojang (school), the largest and best equipped martial arts facility in Halifax.

Chimo Taekwondo is proud to offer a combined martial arts curriculum that delivers a well rounded program designed to meet anyone’s fitness, self protection, recreation and sports goals.

Traditional and Sport Taekwondo combines the fitness training needed for modern Olympic style competition with the ancient warrior’s art of defense.  Based on the “Art of the Hand and Foot”  Taekwondo utilizes the largest muscle groups of the body to deliver powerful kicks and strikes while utilizing dynamic footwork and body movement.  Whether used in competition, as a means of self protection or simply as a to achieve fitness and wellness, Chimo Taekwondo delivers an excellent program for people aged 3 years and up.  Taekwondo training at Chimo has also been shown to vastly improve overall performance in other sports such as soccer, hockey, volleyball and basketball.

While the modern form of Taekwondo was born within the past 6 decades, the history of Taekwondo reaches back into the mists of time. The roots of Taekwondo extend back as far back as 20 centuries, when records were kept in paintings on walls and stories passed down from family to family. As such, the history of Taekwondo has undergone as many transformations and refinements as the martial art itself.

Tai-Jitsu, translated as “body skill”, is a pure art of self defense which strives for the highest effectiveness with minimum efforts in any situation.  The techniques of Tai-Jitsu are currently used by many police and armed forces around the world including Japan, France, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, and North Africa to mention a few. In our modern society Tai-Jitsu has become a Budo, integrating personality development as part of our goal stressing a deep respect for human life and a principle of proportionality of defense.

Tai-Jitsu is tailored to the abilities and comfort of the student by offering a wide variety of self protection options.  Students are taught a wide variety of strikes, kicks, deflections, throws and immobilizations in both passive or aggressive combinations. The large number of possible techniques are kept flexible and open in order for individuals to choose the techniques that best fit their particular body type, age or personal preferences. Tai-Jitsu is one of Japanese oldest style (Ryu) of Ju-Jitsu whose origins date from 11th century to 16th century. Other names were also used such as Jujutsu, Koshi no Makari and Yawara …

It is important to note that the self discipline and respect, traditionally an integral part of martial arts training, is a strong component of training at Chimo.  Students are taught the rules of the club (#1 amongst those rules is “No Fighting”!) and that respect is to be shown to senior ranks as well as Parents, teachers and other family members.

Training at Chimo Taekwondo is conducted and supervised by Master Doug Large and Master Stephan Poirier.  Together these dedicated martial artists bring almost 60 years of martial arts training and more than 25 years of Instructing to our students.

The Head Instructor at Chimo Taekwondo is Master Doug Large.  A registered WTF 4th Dan Black Belt, Master Large has been practicing Taekwondo daily for more than a decade.  As an athlete, coach and motivational trainer Master Large has been active with youth in a variety of sports for more than 40 years.  Since opening Chimo Taekwondo Master Large has been privileged to teach hundreds of students of all ages and abilities.  Chimo Taekwondo is recognized around the region as a high quality school of martial arts training producing dozens of Black Belts in addition to producing many Local, Provincial, Regional, National and International Taekwondo Champions.
